2 Easy Peasy Approaches to Keep Your Home Organized
Once you’ve decluttered your spaces and your rooms and know what you’re keeping, it’s time to figure out how to organize those belongings. Once you do that, you can keep your home organized.
Even though each room is very distinctly its own space, I use the same sort of organizational approach in all of my rooms, in any home. Regardless of where I’m living, I gravitate toward two simple ways to organize my home:
- Keep belongings near where I’ll use them.
- Group like things together.
When I keep belongings near where I’ll use them, it makes my life easier. Of course I keep pots and pans I frequently use in my kitchen, near the stove. And I keep extra bottles of shampoo near or in my bathroom. But this also might mean that I keep certain things in unconventional places.
Where would you look?
As you decide where to keep things, think about where you’d actually look for that particular item – and then keep it there.
Unless you’ve ruthlessly KonMaried your home, you probably own multiples of certain things. Like combs. Or paperclips. Instead of having these multiples scattered around your home, gather each thing in its own separate place. Gather all of your combs into one container in your bathroom. Collect all the paperclips you own and store them together with your office supplies.
Now that everything’s in one place – and as long as it’s kept near where you’ll use it – you won’t have to wonder where a note pad is the next time you need one. Or a marker. Or an elastic ponytail holder.
Everything In Its Place
Once you’ve organized everything, the important thing is to keep everything organized. When you’re finished using something, put it back where you found it.
There’s nothing that will undermine an organized house quicker than not taking the time to put things away in their proper places. (Just ask me. I know all too well!) If you’ve organized everything you’ve kept in your home, a good rule of thumb is to put things back where they belong.
Remember the old adage, “a place for everything and everything in its place”? That’s one of the best ways to keep your home picked up.
If you created specific places and spaces for your belongings, make sure you put everything back in place when you’re done using it. So often, it’s easy to leave things in a pile, or to let it collect as clutter again. Don’t fall back into those cluttered habits, though. Put things away right away.
Once you’ve done those two things–storing things close to where you use them and putting things back in their proper spaces–you’ll keep your home organized!
