10 Thoughtful, Affordable Hostess Gift Ideas

To bring a hostess gift? Or not to bring? That is the question.

What once was a common practice has dropped in popularity. Whether people are more casual, concerned about a budget, forgetful, or unappreciative, hostess gifts have stopped being the norm.

Even if they’re not as common as decades ago, hostess gifts are a way to thoughtfully show your appreciation as a guest. After all, hosting events comes at a cost of finances, time, and intention.

How can you show your appreciation to a host? Bring a gift! I tend to be a huge fan of consumable gifts, just in case you and your host share different tastes. Here are 10 thoughtful hostess gift ideas that won’t break the bank:

1. Fresh flowers

Whether it’s a potted plant or a freshly cut bouquet, fresh flowers always make a nice hostess gift.

2. A special dessert … that’s not meant to be shared with guests

As you give a hostess gift, bring something your hostess can enjoy after all the guests go home. Desserts always provide a sweet option.

3. A bottle of wine

Depending on your host’s preferences, he may or may not share the bottle of wine with guests. Like the dessert option, the bottle of wine may be enjoyed long after guests leave.

4. A bag of coffee beans … or chocolate covered espresso beans

A bag of roasted coffee beans can make a welcome hostess gift if your hostess enjoys coffee. If you’re unsure, chocolate covered espresso beans always is an option.

Candles of all sizes can be used. Whether you give a couple of votives, a box of taper candles, or a larger candle, this is a hostess gift that’s always nice to keep on hand.

7. A nice smelling bar of soap

Everyone can use soap! Find a nice smelling bar, whether it’s made from a local small business or you grab an Italian or Portuguese bar of goat milk soap. (TJ Maxx and Marshall’s have many of these options.)

8. Note cards

Not that you’re fishing for a thank you note for the hostess gift, but a box of note cards and nice pen can be a simple but useful hostess gift.

9. Box of flavorful tea bags and a jar of local honey

Tea bags can make a great hostess gift. Simply choose your flavor of tea based on the season. Add in a jar of local honey, and you have a great gift option.

10. Hand cream

Especially in winter months when dry skin abounds, a nice tube of hand cream can make a good gift for your host.
